Traffic Violations & License Defense

Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. It goes on your record, adds points, and for anyone who drives for a living it can begin a chain that ends with a suspended license.

Traffic matters get treated as an administrative nuisance right up until they are not. Points accumulate quietly, insurance responds, and at some threshold the motor vehicle agency acts. By then the underlying tickets are usually long since resolved and much harder to revisit.

Paying the ticket is a decision, not a formality

Prepayment is an admission. It closes the matter without anyone examining whether the charge was provable, and it puts points on your record automatically. For a minor violation with no license consequences, that may be perfectly sensible. For anything that carries real points — or for anyone whose job depends on driving — it is worth a conversation first.

Must-appear charges

Some offenses cannot be prepaid and require a court appearance. These are the serious ones:

  • Driving while suspended or revoked — a criminal charge in Maryland, with jail exposure
  • Driving without a license
  • Reckless and aggressive driving
  • Fleeing or eluding
  • Leaving the scene of an accident — escalating sharply where injury is alleged
  • Negligent or reckless driving involving injury

Missing a required appearance can produce a bench warrant and a separate suspension — a common way a manageable problem becomes a much larger one.

Commercial drivers

CDL holders operate under stricter rules and fewer options. Some dispositions that protect an ordinary driver’s record are unavailable to a commercial driver, and violations in a personal vehicle can still reach a commercial license. If you hold a CDL, say so in the first conversation — it changes the entire approach.

Suspensions

Licenses get suspended for accumulated points, for failure to appear, for unpaid obligations, and through the administrative process that follows an impaired driving arrest. Each has its own route to challenge or resolve, and several are time-limited. If you have received notice of a suspension, the useful moment is now, not after it takes effect.

Why a lawyer for a traffic case

Often the goal is not acquittal but disposition — a resolution that keeps points off your record, keeps a criminal conviction off your history, and keeps you driving. That outcome usually depends on knowing what a particular court and a particular prosecutor will actually agree to, which is not something published anywhere.

Common questions

Can I just pay the ticket and be done?

You can, but that is a guilty plea with points attached. Whether it is the right call depends on the violation, your current record, and whether you drive for a living.

I was charged with driving on a suspended license. How serious is that?

In Maryland it is a criminal charge carrying potential jail time, not a simple ticket. It is worth treating as seriously as any other criminal matter.

Can I keep points off my record?

Sometimes. Depending on the court, the charge, and your history, there may be dispositions that avoid points or avoid a conviction. It depends heavily on the specifics.
